Assessing the needs
Once the requirement for a learning needs analysis has been agreed it is important to understand how the need is to be assessed. Our approach is to undertake a task analysis, which identifies a hierarchy of tasks, the standard to which the task must be achieved, and the conditions under which they are to be performed.
This data is collected from a variety of sources and is specific to the individual organisations. As a general indication source material could include any strategy or policy documents, performance reports, sales reports or customer feedback reports. In addition, interviews or workshops with personnel could be carried out with personnel or for new equipment it is often necessary to talk to subject matter experts (sme’s) or technical documentation related to the equipment or software. As part of the approach it is also important to recognise the constraints of collecting the data, and to minimise the impact upon personnel involved in the data search.
